USA Swimming Nationals: Club Wolverine Wins Men’s 400 Medley Relay in Meet-Record Time; Michael Phelps Misses Bid for 100 Back World Record

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 4. MICHAEL Phelps tried to give the fans at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI a world record to call home about, but he came up just short of the men's 100 back global standard during the men's 400 medley relay.

Phelps, however, did tie for the third-fastest time in history with a lead leg of 53.17, while Scott Spann (1:02.52), Davis Tarwater (53.37) and Peter Vanderkaay (49.26) stopped the clock in a meet-record time of 3:38.32. That performance eclipsed the 3:38.37 set by Neil Walker, Brendan Hansen, Ian Crocker and Nate Dusing in 2002.

Tucson Ford's team of Jake Tapp, Bart Steninger, Ryk Neethling and Roland Schoeman finished second in 3:41.69, while Club Wolverine's B team of Chris DeJong, Grant Burtch, Chris Brady and Derick Roe took third in 3:43.03.
