USA Swimming Nationals: Day Five Prelims Through Men’s 50 Freestyle

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 4. THE fifth-and-final day of competition in the USA Swimming National Championships began at the IU Natatorium at IUPUI with preliminary action in the 200 IM and 50 free. Additionally, the men's 800 and women's 1500 freestyle heats will take place.

Women's 200 IM
Katie Hoff of North Baltimore lit up the morning with a world-class swim of 2:12.56, just two seconds off her American record time of 2:10.05. Stanford's Julia Smit took second in 2:15.33, while El Dorado's Caitlin Leverenz placed third in 2:15.64.

Swim Atlanta's Kathleen Hersey (2:16.05), Longhorn's Jessica Rodriquez (2:16.59), King Aquatics' Ariana Kukors (2:16.62), Great Britain's Hannah Miley (2:16.67) and Tucson Ford's Whitney Meyers (2:16.99) made up the rest of the championship heat.

Men's 200 IM
Bob Bowman came through with his promise to give Michael Phelps the morning off as Phelps remained in street gear next to his coach while watching the morning heats of the men's 200 IM.

Brendan Hansen, just for fun, decided to put together a 200 IM with the goal of making it back to finals. He did just that with a time of 2:03.71 to finish sixth in the event. Hansen destroyed his previous personal best of 2:05.21.

Hansen's teammate Eric Shanteau smoked the morning prelims with a time of 2:01.74, while SoNoCo Swim's Geoff Rathgeber placed second in 2:03.03.

FAST's Tyler Clary (2:03.35), Daytona Beach's Ryan Lochte (2:03.36), Stanford's Nate Cass (2:03.64), Indiana University's Todd Patrick (2:04.26) and Trojan's Miguel Molina (2:04.30) will make up the rest of the title contenders.

Women's 50 freestyle
Dara Torres toyed with the field with a top time of 24.91, just off her American record of 24.63. This after Torres shut it down the last 10 meters to coast in under 25 seconds.

Wisconsin Aquatics' Jackie Vavrek placed second in 25.67, while Tucson Ford's Lacey Nymeyer took third in 25.70.

Chesapeake Swim Club's Samantha Woodward (25.70), Area Tallahassee's Carrie Ellis (25.77), Tucson Ford's Lara Jackson (25.79), Trojan's Jessica Hardy (25.85) and California Aquatics' Dana Vollmer (25.94) will also give chase to Torres in the final heat.

Men's 50 freestyle
Stanford's Ben Wildman-Tobriner made a statement with a big-time morning effort of 21.94. That time was just .06 seconds off his personal-best time of 21.88 set in Melbourne at the World Championships this year.

Sun Devil Aquatics Nick Brunelli nearly joined him in the sub-22 club with a personal-best time of 22.01. His previous top time was 22.13 in 2005. Brunelli has been having a strong summer since undergoing shoulder surgery.

N.C. State's Cullen Jones placed third in 22.23, while Tucson Ford's Roland Schoeman (22.38) and Ryk Neethling (22.53) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Longhorn's Garrett Weber-Gale (22.81), Stanford's Alex Coville (22.84) and Bakersfield Swim's Joe Whittington (22.89) rounded out the finale.
