USA Swimming Nationals: Brendan Hansen Owns 100 Breast with 59.59

By John Lohn

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 3. On Tuesday, with the national title in the 200 breaststroke in his pocket, Brendan Hansen (Longhorn) expressed unhappiness with his time. The same could not be said for the 100 breaststroke on Friday night, as Hansen zoomed to the sixth-fastest time in history, an effort of 59.59 that left the field in his wake.

The world-record holder and two-time defending world champion, Hansen was actually second at the 50-meter mark, as his split of 27.99 trailed the 27.90 of Mecklenburg's Mark Gangloff. But, Hansen asserted himself down the stretch, one of his trademarks, and pulled away for a convincing triumph. Hansen owns five of the six-fastest times ever recorded and has broke the one-minute mark on 11 occasions.

"Any chance you get to break a minute, it's nice," Hansen said. "It's a tough thing to do, and to do it twice today (59.98 in prelims) is great. It's been a tough week, but I've been able to collect some information to put in the notebook and I'll use that for the future."

Gangloff, who won the silver medal at the recent Pan American Games, easily collected the silver medal with a time of 1:00.43, more than a second clear of the 1:01.50 produced by Longhorn's Eric Shanteau, who was second in the 200 breast. The fourth slot was occupied by Northwestern product Mike Alexandrov, the NCAA champion in the 100-yard breast. Alexandrov went 1:01.79.
