USA Swimming Nationals: Day Four Prelims Through Men’s 100 Backstroke

INDIANAPOLIS, Indiana, August 3. WITH a breath of fresh air in a particularly bright IU Natatorium at IUPUI, the fourth day of preliminary qualifying took place as swimmers competed in the 200 free, 100 breast and 100 back.

Women's 200 freestyle prelims
Katie Hoff of North Baltimore Aquatics clocked the fastest time of the morning with a 1:59.12, while Kate Ziegler of the Fish continues to make a push for a spot on the women's 800 freestyle relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympic with a second-place effort of 1:59.67.

California's Dana Vollmer placed third in 2:00.20, while Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza (2:00.43) and Santa Clara's Courtney Monsees (2:00.68) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Longhorn's Jessica Rodriquez (2:00.82), Club Wolverine's Allison Schmitt (2:00.92) and Tucson Ford's Lacey Nymeyer (2:01.07) will comprise the rest of the championship final.

Men's 200 freestyle prelims
Jayme Cramer of Southeastern Swimming paced qualifying with a time of 1:47.72 in front of a hometown crowd. Club Wolverine's Michael Phelps qualified second in 1:47.84, while teammate Peter Vanderkaay finished third in 1:48.13.

Longhorn's David Walters (1:48.15), Australia's Kenrick Monk (1:48.21) and Great Britain's Ross Davenport (1:49.16) placed fourth through sixth, while Clearwater Aquatics' Grant Johnson (1:49.20) and Great Britain's David Carry (1:49.44) rounded out the A final entrants with seventh and eighth, respectively.

Women's 100 breaststroke prelims
Megan Jendrick of KING Aquatics and Tara Kirk of Stanford set up a battle in tonight's final as Jendrick touched in 1:07.50 and Kirk clocked a 1:07.55.

Trojan Swim Club owned the next three spots as Jessica Hardy (1:08.11), Rebecca Soni (1:08.29) and Keri Hehn (1:09.02) finished third through fifth.

Center Grove's Michelle McKeehan (1:09.18), El Dorado's Caitlin Leverenz (1:09.45) and Tucson Ford's Annie Chandler (1:09.79) comprised the rest of the A final.

Men's 100 breaststroke prelims
World-record holder Brendan Hansen posted a world-class time during prelims with a readout of 59.98 to easily lead prelims.

Mark Gangloff took second in 1:01.07, while Wildcat Aquatic's Mike Alexandrov (1:01.51) and Longhorn's Eric Shanteau (1:01.57) picked up third and fourth, respectively.

Minnesota's new transfer from Auburn Jon Roberts finished fifth in 1:01.80, while Stanford's Nate Cass (1:02.09) and Mission Viejo's John Criste (1:02.64) took sixth and seventh.

Will Vietti of Wildcat Aquatics claimed the final championship heat spot in 1:02.75.

Women's 100 backstroke prelims
In what might have been an intra-state battle a year ago before defending national champion and 50-back world champ Leila Vaziri graduated from Indiana University, Boilermaker Aquatics' Jenny Connolly posted the fastest time of the morning in 1:01.80. Coral Spring's Vaziri, in a later heat without much competition, clocked the second-best time with a 1:01.81.

Athens Bulldog Mary DeScenza grabbed third in 1:01.92, while Terrapin and current IU Hoosier Presley Bard placed fourth in 1:02.20.

Longhorn's Hayley McGregory (1:02.33), Germantown Academy's Katie Riefenstahl (1:02.34), Gator Swim's Gemma Spofforth (1:02.65) and Atlantis' Kristen Shickora (1:02.72) will also battle for the title.

Men's 100 backstroke prelims
Surprise, surprise. Indiana University's Ben Hesen, a backstroke specialist, topped Club Wolverine's Michael Phelps for the top seed in the 100 backstroke preliminary. Hesen clocked a 54.49, while Phelps finished in 54.53.

Longhorn's David Cromwell snared third place in 54.73, while Bluefish' David Russell (54.77) and Big Cat Aquatics' Patrick Schirk (54.87) took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Schroeder YMCA's Adam Mania (54.99), Auburn's James Wike (55.32) and Arizona Desert Fox' Alex Righi (55.94) rounded out the top eight finishers.
