University of Delaware Swimming and Diving Adds Meredith Law, Levan Beridze to Coaching Staff

NEWARK, Delaware, July 27. FORMER University of Delaware swimming standouts Meredith Law and Levan Beridze have been named graduate assistant coaches for the 2007-08 Blue Hen men's and women's teams, head coach John Hayman announced Friday.

Law, a native of Chesapeake, VA, and Beridze, a native of Tblisi, Georgia, will join a staff that includes Hayman, assistant coach Rory Coleman, and diving coach Peter Metrinko.

Law, who has worked as a youth swimming instructor since the age of 12, earned her degree in history with a minor in English and medieval studies from Delaware in May. She is pursuing a master's degree in education at Delaware.

A four-year standout at Delaware, Law ranks in the top 10 all-time in six events and holds the school record in the 800 freestyle relay with a time of 7:35.69. She also ranks No. 3 in the 400 individual medley (4:33.69), No. 4 in the 1,000 freestyle (10:29.47), No. 4 in the 500 freestyle (5:02.14), No. 6 in the 1,650 freestyle (17:23.31), and No. 7 in the 200 freestyle (1:54.51).

She posted 15 career top 10 finishes at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships, including capturing the 800 freestyle relay title as a freshman in 2004. She also finished fourth in the 800 freestyle relay in 2007, fifth in the 1,650 freestyle in 2005, fifth in the 800 freestyle relay in 2005, and fifth in the 500 freestyle in 2004 at the CAA meet. She also was a two-time winner of the team's Sportsmanship Award. She earned six letters at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and was the team Most Valuable Performer all four seasons and also won the team's Spirit Award.

Beridze, who worked with the UD program last season while finishing his undergraduate degree, will be pursuing a master's degree in public policy and foreign affairs at Delaware.

After transferring from Rutgers University, Beridze enjoyed a standout two-year career for the Blue Hen swimmers in 2004-06 when he was one of the top freestyle sprinters in the CAA. He earned his degree in international relations with a minor in Russian this past May.

He ranks in the top five all-time in four events in Delaware history, including a school record of 3:06.73 in the 400 freestyle relay in 2005-06. He also ranks No. 2 all-time at UD in the 100 freestyle (45.75) and 200 freestyle (1:41.91) and No. 5 in the 50 freestyle (21.18).

He collected 11 top 10 finishes at the CAA Championships in his two seasons, placing fourth in both the 100 freestyle in 2005 and in the 400 freestyle relay in 2006. As a senior in 2006, he collected four top five finishes at the CAA meet as he also placed fifth in the 100 freestyle, 200 freestyle, and 200 freestyle relay. He earned the team's Hugh and Jack Dougherty/UD Alumni Association Team Most Valuable Player Award and also was named to the CAA Academic Honor Roll.

While in Georgia he participated in the FINA World Championships and was also named team Most Valuable Player at Princeton (NJ) High School.
