Gavin Arroyo Returns to Men's Squad

Los Alamitos, CA (June 19) Gavin Arroyo, of Orange, CA, a member of the 1996 USA Olympic water polo team and star player for C.N. Barcelona in Spain, returned to southern California to join his US teammates in full-time training in preparation for the UPS Cup and the Olympic Games. Arroyo, lead C.N. Barcelona to the finals of the Spanish League where they finished second to Real Canoe. Arroyo scored three goals in a 7-6 loss in the third game of the best of three series. Arroyo, who finished among the scoring leaders in the Spanish League, practiced with the US team on Saturday. Arroyo was the CIFSS Water Polo Player of the Year in 1989 and the CIFSS Swimmer of the Year in 1990. He won two NCAA Championships at Cal, Berkeley. In addition to playing on the 1996 US Olympic Team, he was a member of the US team that won the 1997 FINA World Cup and 1999 Pan American Games.

TEAM UPS Enters UPS Cup As Sixth Team

The sixth team entered in the UPS Cup (MEN) will be TEAM UPS. Team UPS will be the athletes in the 2004 Olympic team talent pool (mostly college age athletes) - who will need employment over the course of the four years leading up to the Athens Olympic Games.

The US National Team will see the retirement of from 6 - 8 players after the 2000 Olympic Games. TEAM UPS will provide the athletes who may replace the
retirees next year with the highest level of international experience possible. And to see them through to 2004, UPS will offer these athletes
flexible employment opportunities and help them in their careers while they train. Many of our women's A team are still in college and when they graduate will also need meaningful jobs leading up to Athens. UPS career placement will meet with the members of these teams and outline career opportunities with UPS.

Top collegiate athletes from across the nation have been invited to try out for the team, joining those athletes already in the National Team training camp.

Head Coach- Dante Dettamanti, head coach at Stanford for the past 23 years. His Cardinal teams have won seven NCAA Championships, placed in the top four
in the nation in 18 of his 21 seasons and he has been named NCAA Coach of the Year five times.

Asst. coach - Rick Azevedo, is one of the top young coaches in the Nation. He has served as head coach of the US Junior National Team and Assistant Coach of the 1996 US OLympic Team. He is currently head men's and women's coach of California State University, Long Beach.

Asst. coach Dan Maloney - After many years as assistant coach of the New York Athletic Club, coach Maloney was appointed head men's and women's coach at
Lehman College, Bronx, NY

Asst. coach Tom Whittemore - Coach of one of the most successful D.3 NCAA programs at the University of Redlands.
