Meet Record Book Torched During First Night of Minneapolis Sectional

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, July 18. DURING the first night of long course meter competition at the Minneapolis Speedo Sectionals, five meet standards fell.

The men shot down a trio of records, the longest standing spanning back to 2001. Alex Wold of Minnesota Aquatics joined Eric Nilsson, as both swimmers surpassed the 2:04.22 set by Keam Ang on July 26, 2001 in the 200 fly. Wold, however, touched out Nilsson, 2:02.27 to 2:02.42, to walk away with sole possession of the record.

Mike Holmes of Minnesota Aquatics dominated the field with a readout of 8:19.35 in the 800 free to eclipse the 8:21.31 set by Casey Dauw on July 25, 2002, while Jon Roberts of Minnesota Aquatics blasted the meet record of 2:19.27 set in the 200 breast by Mike Alexandrov on July 25, 2002 when he touched in 2:16.12. Roberts also came up just short of a pool record held by world record holder Brendan Hansen since 1999 of 2:16.07.

On the women's side, Kaia Simmons, 15, of the Squids clocked a 2:14.20 in the 200 fly to erase the 2:15.74 meet record set by Molly Belk on July 20, 2006, while Minnesota Aquatics' Yuan Kobayashi dropped the hammer on her meet record of 8:52.07 set last year with a time of 8:46.90.

Other individual winners included Andrea Hupman of Wildcat Aquatics in the 100 free (56.81), Ashley Wanland of Patriot Aquatics in the 200 breast (2:32.44) and Terry Silkaitis of the Wild in the 100 free (51.08).
