Brittany Gray Breaks Canadian Record in Can Am Swimming Championships for Swimmers with Disability

VANCOUVER, Canada, July 15. BRITTANY Gray of Barrie, Ont., broke the Canadian record in the women's S9 category 200-meter breaststroke on Sunday at the 11-country Can Am Championships for swimmers with a disability.

The competition is this season's big event Paralympic swimmers and the biggest international gathering before next year's Paralympic Games in Beijing. Canada fielded its national team which is tuning up for the Para Pan Am Games next month in Rio.

Gray clocked three minutes and 13.28 seconds to finish ahead of Katarina Roxon of Stephenville, Nfld., second in 3:24.76.

"It was really good," said Gray, 17, a member of last year's world championship team. "At the halfway mark, I was right on my best time and I wasn't sure if I could keep that pace. But I came back really strong and bettered my time in the prelims by three seconds. The key for me is getting off to a great start. This was a great meet to see what I need to work on in training for the Para Pan Am Games."

Three other Canadians won races in the 200 breaststroke in their respective disability categories: Stephanie McDougall of Maple Ridge, B.C., Kirby Cote of Winnipeg and Rachel Tavares of Brockville, Ont.

Canadians collected four medals in the women's 100 backstroke: Valérie Grand'Maison of Montreal and Chelsea Gotell of Antigonish, N.S., placed first and third in the race for visually impaired while Stephanie Dixon of Victoria added gold and Laura Jensen of Fort St. John, B.C., bronze in their respective races.

Roxon took gold in the women's 50 breaststroke with Jessica Tuomela of Sault Ste Marie, Ont., third in the same race. McDougall was second in her 50 breaststroke.

Benoit Huot of Montreal won his third gold this weekend placing first in a men's 100 freestyle while Dixon and Grand'Maison each added silver at the same distance.

Donovan Tildesley of Vancouver was second in the men's 100 backstroke.
