Dara Torres Headlines Third Day of Fort Lauderdale Sectional -- July 15, 2007

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, July 15. DURING the third day of long course meter swimming at the Fort Lauderdale Sectional, 40-year-old Dara Torres headlined a strong day of swimming.

Torres, swimming for Coral Springs Swim Club, won the 50 freestyle in 24.81, while Aqua Crest's Rhi Jeffrey took second in 25.93. For more analysis on Torres' swim, please check out SwimmingWorldMagazine.com's previous report.

For good measure, she anchored Coral Springs' 400 medley relay of Leila Vaziri, Julie Stupp and Caroline Kuczynski en route to a meet-record time of 4:15.37.

Bluefish's Elizabeth Beisel, 14, won the women's 400 freestyle in 4:18.60 as Kim Larson of the Gator Swim Club took second in 4:20.85.

Vaziri, the world record holder in the 50 back, touched first in the 100 back by nearly a second in 1:02.52, while Gemma Spofforth of the Gator Swim Club placed second in 1:03.36.

Coral Springs Swim Club claimed another title, this time when Stupp stopped the clock in 2:17.25 in the 200 IM to beat Beisel's 2:19.07.

On the men's side of the meet, Swim Macon's Jos Smith won the 50 free in 23.55 as he touched out Area Tallahassee's Ed Denton (23.63) and Southeastern Swimming's Jayme Cramer (23.79).

In a longer distance freestyle, Area Tallahassee's Kyle Young grabbed the 400 free crown over Pine Crest's Jeff Raymond, 3:58.38 to 3:59.81, while Bluefish's David Russell topped the 100 back in 55.53. Cramer pushed Russell the entire way with a second-place 55.83.

Pat Mellors closed out the individual events with a dominant win in the 200 IM. He clocked a 2:04.95 with Pine Crest's CJ Nuess taking second in 2:07.01.
