Alicia Aemisegger is Golden at Mid-Atlantic Champs

LEWISBURG, Pennsylvania, July 13. ALICIA Aemisegger (Germantown Academy) and Leah Gingrich (West Shore YMCA) stood out on the third day of action at the Middle Atlantic Championships, held at Bucknell University. Aemisegger, a member of the United States squad that will compete later this summer at the World University Games, was a double-event winner while Gingrich established a meet standard in the 200 freestyle.

Heading into her sophomore year at Princeton University, Aemisegger doubled in the 200 breaststroke and 400 individual medley. Aemisegger lowered her one-year-old meet record in the 200 breast with a mark of 2:35.14, quicker than the 2:37.00 of Caitlin Meehan (Big Cat). Aemisegger then won the 400 I.M., her prime event, in a meet record of 4:48.04, ahead of the 4:51.76 by Gingrich.

Already the winner of the 400 and 800 freestyle events, Gingrich added another freestyle title to her portfolio when she set a meet record in the 200 distance. Gingrich, who earlier this year competed in the World Championships in Melbourne in the open-water discipline, covered her four laps in 2:02.02. That effort provided a come-from-behind triumph over Germantown's Katie Riefenstahl, who touched second in 2:02.18. Riefenstahl won the 50 and 100 freestyles in earlier action.

Kevin McCarthy (Atlantis) won the 200 free on the men's side in 1:54.25, with Sean Biedermann (Big Cat) placing second in 1:54.47. Complementing an earlier triumph in the 100 breaststroke, Suburban Swim Center's Justin Davidson bested the field in the 200 breast with a time of 2:24.75. In the men's 400 I.M., Andrew Gemmell (Delaware Swim Team) broke his meet record with an effort of 4:28.86.
