British Swimming Names World University Games Squad -- June 21, 2007

LONDON, England, June 21. A squad of 19 British swimmers has been selected to compete at the World University Games in Thailand.

Matt Clay, Darren Mew and Terri Dunning will be among those in action in Bangkok this August where they will form part of a Great Britain team made up of athletes from 11 sports.

And the swimming contingent will be looking to better the medal tally they achieved two years ago in Turkey where they contributed 10 of the 19 medals collectively won by the Great Britain team.

Commonwealth Champion Clay, who competed two years ago in Izmir, expects the competition for medals to be tough.

"The World University Games is a great competition," said Clay. "Two years ago the event was of a very high standard and it took a 54.5 to win the 100m Backstroke. That time is up there with the World Championships and Olympics so it shows you how strong an event it is.

"For me it's another opportunity to compete in Asia ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics which is obviously my main focus. It's a multi-sport event and it's the same time of year in a similar climate so it will provide a great Olympic rehearsal."

Clay is pleased with the work he's undertaken since returning from the World Championships in Melbourne and has now shifted his entire focus away from the 50m Backstroke and onto the 100m Olympic event.

"I've been happy with my progress over the past three months. I've trained in America with coach Ian Turner, competed in the U.S. and Europe, and swam fast.

"My times are where I want them to be at the moment but I'll be looking to get my time for the 100m event down as I look towards Beijing next year. Bangkok will allow me to see how that work translates into competition and what else I need to do."

The World University Games take place in Bangkok, Thailand from Aug. 8-18 2007.
