German Duo Tops Sevilla Stop of FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup

SEVILLA, Spain, June 9. THE German duo of Thomas Lurz and Angela Maurer topped their respective fields at the Sevilla, Spain stop of the FINA Marathon Swimming World Cup held at the Guadalquivir River on June 9.

Lurz clocked in at 1:51:49.10 to finish ahead of second-place swimmer Russian Vladimir Dyatchin (1:51:50.71). The Netherlands Maarten Van Der Eijden claimed bronze in 1:51:52.12.

The United States pair of Fran Crippen (1:51:54.00) and Chip Peterson (1:52:03.08) wound up taking fourth and fifth place in the men's competition.

For the women, Maurer stopped the clock in 2:00:00.89 to finish just ahead of budding open water superstar Chloe Sutton of the United States (2:00:05.12). Brazil's Poliana Okimoto placed third in 2:00:06.78.

Kalyn Keller (2:00:24.86) and Kirsten Groom (2:00:24.97) of the U.S. each finished in the top 10 with sixth and seventh-place, respectively.

The next stop in the series will be in London, England on June 17.
