World Championship Polo Update Australia Thrills Home Crowd With 7-6 Win Over U.S.

From www.uswp.org – PERTH, AUSTRALIA – The Australian men’s water polo team gave the home town crowd plenty to cheer about in its 7-6 victory at Challenge Stadium. Australia never trailed in the match and led by as many as three goals before thwarting a last attempt as time expired.

Australian coach Erkin Shagaev was pleased with his team’s 1998 World Championships debut. “Our main task was to shut down Chris Humbert,” he said. “We had to cut the supply of ball to him. That was the game plan as he is the best player in the world.”

Humbert’s lone goal of the game came on a fourth quarter extra-man. “They came out and played well, and in the beginning, their goalie played well,” Humbert said. “We just have to play better tomorrow.” On his chances at two-meters, Humbert said, “I just wasn’t getting the ball. The Australians were playing a really good zone but there’s nothing I can do if I don’t get the ball.”
