Teuscher Hot in Michigan

ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN, May 26. CRISTINA Teuscher dominated some very tough competition to score back-to-back victories on the first night of competition at the Cadillac Challenge Swim Series, held at the Canham Natatorium at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

The 1996 Olympian, swimming for her longtime club, Badger Swim Club, took it to Diana Munz and Kaitlin Sandeno in the 400 meter free, cruising to victory in 4:12.99. Munz and Sandeno were almost three seconds back at 4:15.61 and 4:15.89.

Teuscher then pumped out another large win, taking the 200m IM in 2:15.85, well ahead of breaststroke ace Kristy Kowal, at 2:18.46.

Amy Van Dyken staged a triumphant return to competition after her most recent shoulder surgery, taking the 50m free in a solid 25.63, with Ashley Tappin second at 26.08.

In the men's events, 18-year-old Klete Keller won a tight three-way battle in the 400m free with flyer Tom Malchow and Robert Margalis. The Phoenix Swim Club ace touched in 3:54.30 to Malchow's 3:54.78 and Margalis's 3:55.01.

Tom Wilkens, the world leader in the 200m IM won his event in 2:05.54 but he was pushed by 14-year-old North Baltimore sensation Michael Phelps, who was less than a second behind (2:06.50).

Jason Lezak scored a solid win in the 50 free, his 22.82 outdistancing Neil Walker's 23.12.
