2 World Records for Inky -- May 26, 2000

SHEFFIELD, England, May 26. DUTCH swimmer Inge ("Inky") de Bruijn cracked one world record and tied another today at the Super Grand Prix meet in Sheffield, England.

De Bruijn equaled the 50 meter freestyle world mark set in September 1994 by China's Le Jingyi and beat the 50 meter butterfly mark she, herself, set just six days ago in Monaco.

The blond, 27-year-old sprinter clocked 24.51 seconds in the heats of the 50 meter freestyle heats in Sheffield equaling Le's seemingly untouchable world mark set at the 1994 World Championships. It obliterated Inky's European record of 24.84 set at the European championships in Istanbul on July 31 last year.

In the heats of the 50m butterfly, Inky touched in 25.64, destroying the mark of 25.83 she set last Saturday at the Mare Nostrum meet in Monaco. She is now precisely three-quarters of a second faster than the next fastest swimmer in history in this event. Inky, who trains at Tualatin Hills Swim Club in Oregon under Paul Bergen, hopes to improve on today's performances in tomorrow's finals.
