Torrey Pines, Carlsbad Get the Best of CIF San Diego Section Division One Championship Competition

SAN DIEGO, California, May 30. BOTH Torrey Pines and Carlsbad outmatched their respective competitors in the CIF San Diego Section Division One Championships by sizable margins.

Team Scores

Torrey Pines cruised to a 323-point first-place finish on the women's end of competition. Carlsbad picked up the second-place honor with 153 points while Eastlake came in third with 135 points.

Carlsbad used the three-relay sweep to boost itself above and beyond the men's competition. Carlsbad had a first-place point total of 292 while Poway came in second (171) and Rancho Bernardo came in third (149).

Women's Results

Linda Herrman of Torrey Pines upended the rest of the field in both of her events. She placed first in both the 200 freestyle (1:50.01) and the 100 freestyle (51.89).

Jessica Schmitt of Torrey Pines clocked a record-setting 2:00.94 in her 200 IM, adding another scorching 200 IM time into the national mix. Schmitt reset her 2006 record of 2:01.86. Schmitt also took gold in the 500 freestyle (4:51.71).

Poway's Bianca Cascieri used a little record-setting magic of her own, breaking the 100 butterfly mark in 55.42. Cascieri slid just under the former standard of 55.51 set in 2005 by Erin Yamamoto of Mt. Carmel.

Torrey Pines placed first in two of the three relays. The 200 medley relay contingent of Anna Pold, Schmitt, Murphy Wimer and Hermann touched the wall first in 1:46.97. Pold, Herrman, Brett Pedley and Schmitt also captured the gold medal in the 400 freestyle relay with a scorching time of 3:30.29.

Men's Results

Carlsbad flaunted its talent throughout the course of the meet through monopolizing the relay events.

The Carlsbad grouping of Joe Stitts, Stephen Lorenz, Spencer DiDio and Russell Hampton kicked off the meet with a 1:39.25 win in the 200 medley relay. Carlsbad's quartet of Hampton, Travis Gough, Harold Rivers and Nick Marsden picked up gold number two in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:29.41 time. Stitts, Lewis Anderson, DiDio and Marsden won decisively in the 400 freestyle relay, clocking a time of 3:13.48.

Evan Simoni of San Diego corralled two individual first-place finishes throughout the course of the meet. Simoni placed first in the 200 IM with a 1:53.17 time and first in the 100 backstroke with a 53.59.
Mira Mesa's Luke Murphy also picked up two wins. Murphy finished first in the 200 freestyle (1:41.85) and the 500 freestyle (4:33.11).

Diving Results

Laura Sanford of Torrey Pines placed first in the women's diving competition with a 226.25 score. Kaitlin Benner of La Costa Canyon took second with a 200.70 score while Jena Mills of Granite Hills placed third (184.65).

Kenneth Caslava of Mission Hills took the gold in the men's competition with a 201.10 score. Kevin Jones from Fallbrook took second (194.15) and Corey Cowger from Rancho Bernardo placed third (193.15).
