Palisades Charter, Cleveland Easily Win CIF Los Angeles City Section Titles

LOS ANGELES, California, May 27. PALISADES Charter and Cleveland walked away with their respective titles in both the men's and women's competitions in the CIF Los Angeles City Section Championship meet.

Team Scores

Palisades Charter outdid the women's competition, scoring 300 points throughout the course of the meet. Venice earned a second-place finish with 180 points while Granada Hills Charter racked up 172 points for third place.

Cleveland locked up the 2007 men's team title with 280 total points. Birmingham accumulated 184 points in the meet, securing a second-place finish. San Pedro settled for the third spot with 138.5 points.

Women's Individual Results

Andi Murez from Venice dominated her competition in both of her events. Murez touched the wall in 1:52.17 in her 200 freestyle and clocked a 57.40 in her 100 butterfly. El Camino's Megan Brown also bested her opponents by a significant amount in both her 200 IM (2:15.87) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.31), taking first-place wins in both. Taft standout Chelsea Lim covered the sprint events. She cranked out wins in the 50 freestyle (24.89) as well as the 100 freestyle (54.59).

Palisades Charter went 2-for-3 in the relays, taking the 200 medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay. The quartet of Kristin Fujii, Alyssa Machida, Nicole Washington and Julie Wynn beat out the field in the 200 medley relay with a winning time of 1:56.51. The Palisades Charter crew of Cheyanne Kampe, Jasmine Punch, Julie Wynn and Hayley Lemoine had a closer race than the 200 medley relay team, but they pulled out a first nonetheless with a 3:50.53.

Men's Individual Results

Phillip Cho of Sherman Oaks took two individual wins, unleashing a 2:03.76 200 IM and a 1:00.47 100 breaststroke. Michael Chiu of Cleveland swept both of his individual events, capturing first-place finishes in the 100 freestyle (48.47) and the 100 backstroke (53.65).

Cleveland flaunted its depth and talent in the relay events, taking first place in each of the three relays. Cleveland's 200 medley relay grouping of Chiu, Frederick Aquino, Ashkaun Hami and Albert Han won with ease with a 1:42.50 time. The 200 freestyle relay crew of Sergey Makaryants, Aquino, Renato Santiago and Han touched first, clocking 1:35.43. Michael Reckstin, Santiago, Hami and Chiu stopped the clock at 3:24.20 en route to a sweep-clinching victory in the 400 freestyle relay.

Diving Results

Jamie Flynn from El Camino outdove the women's competition, winning by more than a 167-point margin. Flynn took gold with a score of 467.05. Melissa Hymes from Taft came in second with a 289.20 while Ashley Baele from Palisades Charter placed third (289.20).

The men's diving competition proved to be much more of a fight for the gold than the women's. Alexander Dashiell of Cleveland placed first with a 397.40 score. Danny Gruen of El Camino followed closely behind, scoring 394.15. Patrick Cohen settled for third place with a 392.15.
