USA Balances Its Record With 8-5 Victory

The United States men’s water polo team recorded an 8-5 victory over Slovakia Saturday at Challenge Stadium to improve to 1-1 in Group D play.

After losing to Australia on opening night 7-6 in a match it never led, the United States took control early in its contest with Slovakia. Center forward Chris Humbert, the team’s most dangerous offensive player, scored first at 2:19. Jeremy Laster made the score 2-0 with just three seconds left in the opening period. Both goals came with the United States attacking with an extra man.

US goalkeeper Dan Hackett finished the game with seven saves, including four in the fourth period.

“We had better movement in the offense tonight compared to last night,” said coach John Vargas. “Humbert opened things up by drawing several ejections and we had lost of different guys score. We definitely played better than last night, so we need to keep on improving.”
