Smoking Could be Banned in Certain Areas During 2008 Olympics

BEIJING, China, May 14. CLEANER air might be coming to the 2008 Olympics, at least in certain areas. The Beijing Daily has reported that the municipal government is considering placing a ban on smoking at particular locations, including the Olympic Village, the athletic venues and certain hotels and restaurants.

If the plan goes through, individuals wishing to smoke will have to find a designated area, with violators of the policy facing fines for smoking in clean-air locales. Statistics show that China is the largest tobacco producer in the world and its people have the highest smoking rate. The 1988 Winter Games in Calgary were the first smoke-free Olympics.
