Promising Seniors-To-Be 2007: Peter Geissinger

PHOENIX, Arizona, May 7. IN our next profile of a promising senior-to-be, SwimmingWorldMagazine.com spoke with Peter Geissinger. Geissinger swims for James Jordan with The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, N.J., and Henk Jansen with the Darien YMCA Piranha Swim Team located in Darien, Conn.

As of the latest April 26 National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association (NISCA) release of All-American candidates, Geissinger sits sixth in the 100 butterfly with a time of 49.23.

Additionally, he sports a 1:43.11 in the 200 free, 1:56.07 in the 200 IM, 21.11 in the 50 free and 45.76 in the 100 free.

Here is our interview with Geissinger:

Was there a watershed mark in your career that made it clear you had a gift for the sport and could achieve big thing?
It was probably my freshman year of high school when I went into the swim season with a :54 in the 100 fly, and then I dropped two seconds to go a :52.13 at Prep Easterns. After that, I just decided I wanted to keep dropping time and get faster in everything. So far, I've been able to continue doing that.

What type of interaction do you have with your coach when it comes to training? What kind of input do you have?
With both my club coach and my high school coach, I just do what they tell me to. They're both great coaches, so I trust their workouts completely. I'm always able to talk to both of them about what I liked and thought was helpful and what I didn't like. But, I'm not really sure what I say changes their opinion much.

What are your goals for your senior season?
I want to win the four events I swim at Prep Easterns (two individuals, two relays). For my high school team, Lawrenceville, I want us to win the state meet for the ninth consecutive year. I also want to go sub 49 in the 100 fly, 20.1 in the 50 free, and swim in the Olympic Trials.

Who has made the biggest impact on your swimming career to this point?
I can't give the credit to only one person. My parents have been great by always giving me so much support and not pressuring me in any way. My brother also has always been a training partner for me back home and has such a positive attitude about swimming. Also, everyone on my high school team has helped me as well by keeping me working in practice and keeping me focused on my goals.

Have you verbally committed to any University? If so, which one and why? If not, who is in your top five and why?
No and I'm not really certain of my top five yet but I guess I'd have to say North Carolina, Virginia, Georgia Tech, Stanford and Northwestern, because they are all good academic and swimming schools. But that is completely open to change as of now. I'm visiting a lot of schools this summer. So, hopefully, I get a clearer picture of where I want to go after that.

What has the recruiting process been like for you?
It's been great so far. I've heard it gets really exciting but also really overwhelming after July 1. I am excited for this summer, when I am going to be talking to so many different coaches and hearing about all the different programs. It's going to be a lot of fun.
