Corinne Showalter Takes Down Kim Linehan’s 1979 Record at YMCA National Championships

FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, April 2. IN the first day of competition at the YMCA National Championships, 16-year-old Corinne Showalter of Sarasota took down a 28-year-old record of Kim Linehan in the 500-yard freestyle.

Showalter touched in 4:41.91 in the middle distance event to surpass the 4:43.73 Linehan set in 1979. The year before, Linehan set a pair of world records in the 400 and 1500-meter freestyle events. She later placed fourth in the 400 free at the 1984 Olympics Games after sitting out the 1980 Games due to the U.S. boycott.

Other event winners throughout the day included Carlyn Lungmus (56.60) of Sarasota in the 100 back, Dagny Knutson (2:01.03) of Minot in the 200 IM and Emily Lloyd of Anne Arundel and Teresa Long of the Triangle Area with matching 23.57s in the 50 free in the women's meet.

For the men, Jim Barbiere (50.93) of Ralph Stolle won the 100 back, while Austin Detra of Sarasota (4:26.71) touched first in the 500 free. Additionally, Scott Marino (1:50.55) of Fanwood-Scotch Plains claimed the 200 IM, while Peter Geissinger (20.59) of Darien picked up gold in the 50 free.

In relay competition, the Farmington women's foursome of Megan Bender, Brynn Marecki, Kerry Abel and Katya Bachrouche won the 200 medley relay in 1:45.77, while the Birmingham men's quartet of Morgan Priestley, Mike Zennedjian, Paul Collins and Mike Barczak touched first in 1:34.67.
