United States Women Advances to Semis in Water Polo at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 27. THE United States women's team advanced to the semifinal round of water polo play at the FINA World Championships with a 10-6 win over Spain in quarterfinal action.

15th-Place Match
Cuba edged Puerto Rico, 11-9, in the 15th-place match. Hirovis Hernandez led Cuba with four goals, while teammate Lisandra Frometa scored a hat trick with three. Amanda Ortiz Irizarry led Puerto Rico with four goals.

13th-Place Match
Kazakhstan turned in a 12-9 victory over China. Assel Jakayeva and Marina Gritsenko paced Kazakhstan with four goals each, while Teng Fei led China with three goals.

Classification 9-12
Brazil doubled up New Zealand, 14-7, in a classification match. Camila Pedrosa-Freire led Brazil with four goals, while Kirsten Hudson connected twice for New Zealand.

In the other classification match, the Netherlands downed Germany, 8-6. Iefke van Belkum paced the Netherlands with three goals, while Monika Kruszona amassed half of Germany's goals with three.

Quarterfinals
Russia advanced with a thrilling 10-9 win over Greece. Elena Smurova led Russia with four goals, while Sofya Konukh notched three goals. Angeliki Gerolymou tickled the twine five times in the losing effort.

The U.S. moved on to semis with a 10-6 triumph over Spain. Brenda Villa hit the back of the net four times for the U.S., while Blanca Gil Sorli made all six goals for Spain.

Hungary picked up an 11-9 victory over Canada to make it to semis. Mercedes Stieber led Hungary with a hat trick, while Marina Radu scored four goals for Canada.

In the final quarterfinal match, Australia advanced with a 12-8 win over Italy. Suzannah Fraser, Taniele Gofers and Kate Gynther led a balanced scoring attack with two goals each for Australia, while Tania di Mario connected with four goals.
