MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, April 2. THE Burnsville men's depth trumped the competition in Class AA action at the Minnesota State Championship.

Burnsville led the way with 206.5 points. Mounds View placed second with 175 points while Edina snuck in at third with 153 points.

Curt Carlson from Maple Grove started the meet off by breaking a 12-year-old record in the 200 freestyle. Carlson's 1:38.35 time eclipsed former Olympian and St. Thomas Academy swimmer Tom Malchow's 1:38.51 state mark. Carlson also took top honors in the 100 freestyle, winning the event in 45.19. Carlson signed a national letter of intent at the University of Minnesota, according to the University of Minnesota sports information department.

Michael Richards of Roseville Area, a Minnesota recruit, turned in one of the fastest times of the season nationwide for the 50 freestyle with a state-record performance of 20.22. Colin Lee-To of Minnetonka held the former standard of 20.42, which he set in 2005.

Hastings senior Philip Seleskie turned in two first-place times and claimed a state record in his individual events. Seleskie pulled ahead early in the 200 IM, cruising to a 1:49.53 time. He notched a Minnesota Class AA mark in the 100 backstroke, winning the event with a time of 49.43. Michael Zee of Apple Valley set the former standard of 49.52 in 2003.

Maple Grove's grouping of Carlson, Curtis Myers, Gabe Krump-Johnson and Michael Williams avoided a comeback mounted by Roseville Area's Michael Richards (19.86) en route to winning the event in 1:25.87. Williams, Myers, Matt McKee and Carlson pulled ahead of Burnsville in the last 100 of the 400 freestyle relay to win in 3:11.73.
