Bracket Play Begins in Women’s Water Polo at Worlds

MELBOURNE, Australia, March 25. BRACKET play began with second-round action in women's water polo at the FINA World Championships in Melbourne, Australia. Additionally, a pair of classification matches took place for those that did not advance to the bracket.

Classification 13-15 Round
China put together a 12-4 win over Puerto Rico in the classification rounds. Sun Yujun led all scorers with four goals, while Teng Fei registered a hat trick for China as well. Paola Medina led Puerto Rico with two goals.

In the other classification match, Kazakhstan downed Cuba, 10-7. Marina Gritsenko shouldered the load with five goals, while Irina Tolkunova notched four goals as well. Hirovis Hernandez tallied a pair of goals to lead Cuba.

Second Round
Spain earned a quarterfinal berth by downing Brazil, 13-9. Blanca Gil, Miriam Lopez-Escribano and Laura Lopez paced Spain with three-goal performances, while Marina Canetti added her own hat trick for Brazil.

Canada also advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 14-10 triumph over Germany. Cora Campbell and Christine Robinson led the Canadians with three goals, while Ariane Rump totaled a match-high four goals to Germany.

Greece made its way to the quarterfinals with a 9-5 win over New Zealand. Angeliki Gerolymou and Stavroula Kozompoli each connected for three goals to lead Greece, while Kelly Mason led a balanced attack for NZL with two goals.

In the final second round match of the day, Italy scored a thrilling 7-6 victory over the Netherlands. Unfortunately, a box score has not been made available for details.
