Auburn Completes Fifth Straight Men's NCAA Division I Title With Three Solid Days -- March 17, 2007

Auburn Completes Fifth Straight Men's NCAA Division I Title With Three Solid Days
By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 17. AT the site of his first NCAA title, Auburn head coach David Marsh completed the career circle with his 12th coaching title when Auburn tallied 566 points to win its fifth consecutive men's title at the Dorothy L. Sheppard Pool on the campus of the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, Minn.

In an ironic twist, Marsh tied Richard Quick for the most career titles at 12 each. Not only did Quick serve as Marsh's coach while Marsh attended Auburn, Quick will officially replace Marsh as the head coach of Auburn swimming and diving on April 1, as Marsh heads to Charlotte, N.C., to head up a United States Olympic Committee Center of Excellence at the Mecklenburg Aquatic Club. This may be the first time in any sport that a legend ties a retired legend for a legendary record, and then is replaced by that legend at the end of the year.

Also of note, Auburn as a program moved into third place all time with 12 total team titles. Stanford and Texas lead the way with 16 each.

The rest of the top 10 is as follows:
2. Stanford, 397
3. Arizona, 371
4. Florida, 321
5. Texas, 296
6. Northwestern, 221
7. Michigan, 207
8. California, 176
9. Southern California, 145
10. Minnesota, 131

As for the award winners:
Swimmer of the Year: Cesar Cielo, Auburn
Diver of the Year: Steve Segerlin, Auburn
Swimming Coach of the Year: David Marsh, Auburn
Diving Coach of the Year: Jeff Shafer, Auburn
