Northwestern’s Mike Alexandrov Sets U.S. Open, NCAA Record in 100 Breast; Potentially Sets American Standard

By Jason Marsteller

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota, March 16. NORTHWESTERN's Mike Alexandrov went off in the 100 breaststroke to drop the U.S. Open and NCAA record by .30 seconds with a 51.56 at NCAAs. The previous record of 51.86 set by Jeremy Linn of Tennessee stood since Feb. 21, 1997.

The win is Northwestern's first in the event.

Stanford's Paul Kornfeld finished second in 52.19, while Alabama's Vlad Polyakov finished third in 52.25.

Auburn remained in first with 294 points, while Stanford moved to second with 229 points. Arizona (218), Texas (169) and Florida (165) comprised the rest of the top five.

We originally reported that Alexandrov set the American record based on announcements made at the facility. This led to some confusion among our readers, as Alexandrov is a Bulgarian native. However, Alexandrov, who has lived in America since he was eight, acquired dual-citizenship in the United States along with his family last September.

There is some confusion on whether or not the swim will stand as an American record. The record will be applied for by the meet management staff, and it will be up to USA Swimming to decide the issue.

Either way, this is clearly an administrative issue and should not detract from the incredible swim put forth by Alexandrov.
