By Michael Collins
Bobby Patten, 35 and representing his new DAMM team (Dallas Aquatic Masters), was overall male champion in the 1000 with a time of 9:41.63 - just short of the National Record of 9:41.12 held by Franz Mortensen in the 35-39 age group.
Jill Hernandez, 39 representing the USA Water Bandits, was the top female swimmer in the 1000 with a time of 10:40.35.
Only two national age group records fell in the 1000. Celeste Miller, 50, representing Sierra Nevada Masters, swam 11:54.13 to sneak past Barbara Dunbar's 1999 record of 11:55.06. Ray Taft of San Mateo Master Marlins smashed the 80-84 record of 16:04.32 set by ALDO DA ROSA in 1998 with a blazing 15:30.69. That's averaging 1:33 per 100 which isn't bad even if you aren't 80!
