Meolans Opts to Bypass World Championships

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina, March 3. ARGENTINA'S Jose Meolans will shun the World Championships in Melbourne later this month in order to prepare for the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo this summer. While Meolans could obviously race in both competitions, his South American roots clearly indicate that the Pan Am Games are a larger priority.

Meolans made the same decision in 2003, opting to bypass the World Champs in Barcelona. That year, he took gold in the 50 and 100 freestyle events at the Pan Am Games. Earlier this month, Meolans checked in with a time of 51.32 in the 100 freestyle.

Special thanks to South American correspondent Jorge Aguado for contributing to this report.
