By Brian Savard

CANTON, Ohio, March 10. GATES Mill Hawken won the first relay and never looked back as it dominated the Ohio Division 2 Women's State High School Championship.

Erica Dorfman's freestyle swim in the relay propelled the Gates Mill Hawken's 200 medley relay grouping of Katlin Dagg, Rachel Borden and Louise Gliga to a 1:51.12 first-place finish. Jennifer Aronoff, Gliga, Dorfman and Brittany Strumbel represented Gates Mill Hawken in the 200 freestyle relay as they annihilated the field by over two seconds. The quartet of Aronoff, Dagg, Gliga and Strumbel closed out the meet with a 3:35.45 win in the 400 free relay.

Amanda Smith of Indian Hill touched the wall in a state-record time in the 100 butterfly. Her 55.65 performance lowered former Columbus St. Francis DeSales swimmer Anne Weilbacher's 2000 time of 56.04.

Strumbel paced the field in both the 200 freestyle (1:50.13) and the 500 freestyle (4:49.10) en route to two individual gold medals.

Margo Geer, a Center Fairbanks freshman, warned state sprinters through her swims that she is sticking around for three more years. Her winning time in the 50 freestyle (23.60) fell just short of the 23.56 state standard. Geer shaved nearly a full second off of her preliminary time in the 100 freestyle en route to a winning time of 51.34.

Margaret Smith of Indian Hill joined her teammate atop the double event winners. Smith captured a state title in the 200 I.M. (2:04.58) as well as the 100 backstroke (58.64).

Brittany TenEyck, a Millbury Lake senior, fell 10 points shy of the state record in the diving competition with 457.55 points. Nicole Brehm, a Monroe junior, placed second with 457.55 points and Nikki Craft, a Bay Village freshman, took third with 424.90 points.
