American Short Course Championships Complete Second Day

AUSTIN, Texas, February 23. THE American Short Course Championships completed the second day of competition competed in short course yards in Austin, Texas with a variety of fast swims on the day.

Women's 400 IM
Kirsty Coventry of Longhorn held off a pesky 16-year-old teammate in Jess Rodriquez (4:09.81) to win the 400 IM in 4:09.42.

Coventry built a two-second lead heading into the final 100 and scratched her way to a win as Rodriquez split 29.11 and 27.32 coming home.

16-year-old Jessie Schmitt of North Coast rounded out the podium in 4:11.32.

Men's 400 IM
Eric Shanteau of Longhorn dropped more than 10 seconds off his prelim time to win handily in 3:46.23 after trailing Mark Dylla of Aces (3:52.69) at the 200-meter mark by .67 seconds.

Meanwhile, Alexy Belyy of Cal State Bakersfield closed out the top three in 3:54.22.

Women's 100 breaststroke
16-year-old Jessie Schmitt of North Coast crushed the field in the women's breaststroke with a time of 1:02.80. Desak Junita of Novaquatics finished second in 1:05.29, while Caroline Maxvill of Metroplex placed third in 1:05.63.

Men's 100 breaststroke
Mark Gangloff of Auburn Aquatics took home the 100 breast crown with a time of 52.53 after Brendan Hansen withdrew from finals after posting a 53.78 in prelims. Alex Hetlund of SMU wound up second in 53.61, while Michael Silva of Auburn took third in 54.52.

Women's 100 backstroke
15-year-old Mary Beck led a top-four Longhorn sweep with a time of 53.71 to win the 100 back. Teammates Eliza Wycliffe and Kirsty Coventry tied for second in 54.12, while Tanica Jamison finished fourth in 54.22.

Men's 100 backstroke
Doug Van Wie of Auburn notched a .13-second victory over Longhorn's David Cromwell, 46.66 to 46.79, in the men's 100 back. Meanwhile, Longhorn Nick Thoman placed third in 47.61.

Women's 200 freestyle
Kate Ziegler of The Fish pocketed another freestyle title, this time in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.17. The Longhorns captured the next two spots with Kirsty Coventry taking second in 1:47.41 and Tanica Jamison placing third in 1:47.51.

Men's 200 freestyle
Jayme Cramer of Southeastern knocked off Aaron Peirsol of Longhorn in front of a partisan Texas crowd with a time of 1:33.86, while Peirsol placed just behind in 1:34.11. Longhorn teammate Dale Rogers completed the top three in 1:35.12.
