Eastern Michigan Wins MAC Title

YPSILANTI, Michigan, February 17. THE Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team captured its second consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship, here Saturday night at Jones Natatorium during the 2007 MAC Women's Swimming and Diving Championships. Madeleine Pilchard earned her second consecutive MAC Swimmer of the Year award, while Sarah Chrzanowski was named MAC Diver of the Year. EMU finished with 655 points, ahead of second place Ohio 618 and third place Miami 596.

The Eagles had nine members of the All-MAC team, with Pilchard, Chrzanowksi, Ashley Durand and Becky Renkola garnering first team honors. Catherine Lee Ha, Claire Letendre, Chantelle Lonsdale, Alissa Ricard and Sheila Carson were named to the All-MAC second team.

Danielle Beland from Akron was awarded the Most Outstanding Senior Swimmer honor. Toledo had both the Swimming Coach of the Year in Larg Jargensen and the Diving Coach of the Year in Marie Canarecci. Canarecci was a diver for EMU last season and finished in the top-six in both diving events at last year's championships.

Ohio's Courtney Gallo claimed the 1650-yard freestyle race in 16:56.94. Miami's Jennifer Flaherty finished second in 17:02.77, followed by Caitlin Drozin (17:13.96) from Ohio. EMU's Claire Letendre (17:22.06) finished third and Jaclyn Carey (17:30.13) finished sixth.

Emily Wylam from Ohio won the 200-yard backstroke with a 2:00.95 followed by Akron's Kendall Karchner in 2:01.03, both times are NCAA B consideration. Ohio's Sigal Simsolo finished third (2:03.85).

Three Eagles placed in the championship heat of the 100-yard freestyle, with Catherine Lee Ha (51.04) and Alissa Ricard (51.85) finishing just being Toledo's Brie Henning (50.38) for first place. Steph Cholyk finished seventh, clocking in at 52.15.

Ashley Durand took home first place honors in the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:17.57, an NCAA B consideration time. Karen Frazier (2:17.93) from Miami placed second followed by Toledo's Kylie Gamelier (2:19.47). EMU's Chantelle Lonsdale finished fifth in 2:21.03.

Akron's Danielle Beland won the 200-yard butterfly in NCAA B consideration time, 2:02.06. Ohio's Leah Giancarli (2:04.13) finished second, while teammate Rachael Kloosterman (2:05.56) finished third. Claire Letendre (2:09.79) finished seventh for the Eagles.

Becky Renkola won the MAC championship in the three-meter dive with a 327.30 score. Akron's Megan McKinley (308.20) finished second, while Chrzanowski (306.10) took third.

EMU's 400-yard freestyle relay team of Pilchard, Jennifer Miller, Ricard and Lee Ha claimed the final event of the meet in 3:24.21. Ohio (3:27.82) took second and Miami (3:28.11) placed third.
