Bozeman High School Captures Montana State Championship

GREAT FALLS, Montana, February 17. BOZEMAN High School placed first in both the men's and women's competitions at the Montana State High School Championships this past weekend.

Billings West High School and Missoula Big Sky High School rounded out the top three schools on the women's side with 144 and 133 points, respectively. Missoula Hellgate High School took the runner-up honors for the men's competition with 169 points and Billings West High School took third with 137.5 points.

The women's competition had two double winners. Hannah Halstrom, a Bozeman junior, finished first in both the 200 freestyle (1:57.12) and the 100 butterfly (59.55). Bozeman senior Hannah Chura won both the 100 backstroke (59.06) and the 200 IM (2:08.75).

Bozeman captured two relays. After Great Falls High School touched out the Bozeman 200 medley relay comprised of freshman Haley Bissel, senior Kristin Lambers, Halstrom and senior Laurel Goins in the morning, Bozeman came back to win the title at night (1:56.50). In the 400 freestyle relay, Missoula Big Sky defeated Bozeman in the morning only to lose to the quartet of Bissel, Goins, Halstrom and Chura at night. The girls bested the field by over two seconds, clocking 3:41.29.

The closest race of the meet came in the men's 100 freestyle final. Keith Miller, a senior from Missoula Big Sky, touched out 200 freestyle champion Karl Kingry by .01 with a winning time of 47.76. Miller also bested the field in the 50 freestyle (21.99).

Major Robinson, a Sentinel High School junior, joined Miller as the only other double winner of the men's competition. Robinson took gold in the 200 IM (2:01.02) and in the 100 backstroke (54.63).

Missoula Big Sky swam to a first-place finish in both the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 freestyle relay (freshman Andrew Bovard, junior Heath Eustance, junior Tommy Ross and Miller) won with a time of 1:30.68 and the 400 freestyle relay comprised of the same four men edged out Missoula Hellgate with a time of 3:18.72 for a second relay victory.
