Mary Beck Sets National High School Record in 200 I.M.

SAN ANTONIO, Texas, February 4. MARY Beck, a sophomore at Austin Westlake High School, established a national high school record in the 200-yard individual medley on Saturday. Beck clocked 1:58.28 at the Texas Region VII 5A Championships at the Josh Davis Natatorium and broke the former record by the smallest of margins. The former record of 1:58.29 was set in November of 2005 by Mount Sinai's (N.Y.) Julia Smit, now a freshman at Stanford.

Beck split 26.28 for the opening 50, hit the midway point at 54.67 and made the transition into the freestyle leg at 1:29.81. She also took top honors in the 500 freestyle with a swim of 4:44.78. Beck recently represented the United States at the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in Hawaii, scoring a team-high 29 points while winning gold medals in the 200 I.M. and 400 I.M. She also earned a silver medal in the 200 backstroke.
