Youngstown Earns 154-116 Win Over Slippery Rock at Home

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio, February 2. THE Rock swam well against the NCAA Division I Penguins, but dropped a 154-116 decision. Beth Choike finished first in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events Friday night to lead the NCAA Division II Rock to a strong effort vs. D-1 Youngstown State.

Choike's blue-ribbon efforts and times of 1:05.76 and 2:20.94 in the respective events accounted for half of The Rock's four first-place finishes.

Mary Ann McCauley had a hand in both of the other Rock first-place finishes. She won the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01.35 and swam the second leg of the winning 200 freestyle relay.

Joining McCauley on the winning relay team, which swam a 1:42,72 time, were Raquel Woerner, Lauren Hervatin and Heather Walbright.

Jessica Student claimed a pair of second-place honors as she finished behind teammates McCauley and Choike in the 100 butterfly and 200 backstroke events, respectively.

Betsy Wilson's runner-up finish behind Choike in the 100 backstroke and Hervatin's No. 2 finish in the 500 freestyle with a season-best 5:36.01 time rounded out the list of Rock second-place finishes.

Wilson also placed fourth in the 200 backstroke event, in which Choike and Student gave The Rock a 1-2 finish.

Abigail Surdoval placed third behind teammates Choike and Wilson in the 100 backstroke to complete the list of Rock highlights.

The Rock's next action will be from Feb. 21-24 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championships at Cumberland Valley High School in Mechanicsburg.
