With World Champs on Horizon, Lurz Sizzles

LUXEMBOURG, January 30. SEVERAL German athletes showed they're ready for the World Championships while competing in Luxembourg over the weekend. Annika Lurz demonstrated that she could challenge the 200 freestyle world record of 1:56.64 when she clocked in at 1:57.48 for the four-lap freestyle. Lurz also went 55.54 in the 100 free, tying with Petra Dallman, and edged the Ukraine's Yana Klochkova in the 400 individual medley with a mark of 4:47.22. Klochkova, the two-time Olympic champ, went 4:47.44, but won the 200 I.M. in 2:17.16.

Other solid swims were produced by Steffen Deibler in the 50 free (22.50), 100 free (50.01) and 200 free (1:51.60) and by Birte Steven in the 200 breaststroke (2:27.84). Meanwhile, Thomas Lurz covered the 1,500 free in 15:15.08 and Camelia Potec of Romania prevailed in the 400 free (4:11.68) and 800 free (8:37.97).
