Aussie Munz Back In The Pool After Auto Accident -- March 27, 2000
Leading Australian freestyle and medley swimmer, Lori Munz, was back in the pool less than two weeks after a serious auto accident which required surgery to reconstruct her right kneecap. Munz started physiotherapy and strength training the day after the operation and made her first tentative steps towards being competitive for the Australian Olympic trials by swimming a few laps with her leg in a brace. It will be a very tough assignment for the 21-year-old as the selection trails start May 13 contrasting those in the US which will be held in August. Unfortunately for Munz there is no flexibility in the Australian Olympic qualification rules for injured swimmers, if you miss the trails you don't make the team, even if she is fully fit by September. Australian Swimming has never made an exception in the past.
Munz has signed exclusive deals with News Ltd (Press) and the Nine Network (TV) to record her story. Her coach, Rohan Taylor, hopes this will help her focus on her swimming and avoid the distraction of daily intrusions from the media.
