Meet of the Week Recap: No. 3 UW-Stevens Point Women Hold Off UW-La Crosse, 136-107

LA CROSSE, Wisconsin, January 27. IN the Division III SwimmingWorldMagazine.com Meet of the Week, the No. 3 UW-Stevens Point women downed UW-La Crosse, 136-107, in La Crosse. Overall, UWSP only claimed seven out of the 13 events, but had enough second and third place finishes to knock out UW-L.

La Crosse had the two student-athletes double up as Amanda Medendorp swept the diving events, while Kelly Hackbarth won the 200 IM (2:14.50) and the 200 fly (2:12.35). Meanwhile, Stevens Point's Kelsey Crunstedt won the 50 free (24.79) and the 100 free (54.15) to lead her squad.

A pair of provisional qualifying times also went up on the board as UW-L's Kristi Parker posted a B-cut backstroke leadoff of 59.39 in the 400 medley relay and UWSP's Kristen Bennett touched in a B-cut 2:26.85 to win the 200 breaststroke.

400 medley relay
La Crosse started off with a 13-4 lead when Kristi Parker, Sarah Russart, Kelly Hackbarth and Clare Hathaway won in 4:01.25 with Parker clocking a B-cut backstroke leadoff time of 59.39. Meanwhile, Stevens Point's team of Abby Strobel, Trish Nye, Meghan Walsh and Caitlin Hake took second in 4:02.06.

1000 freestyle
UWSP countered in the distance free with a 1-2 effort to take a 19-17 lead. Alissa Colbert easily got her hand to the wall first in 10:57.69, while Kari Slawson took second in 11:02.12. Anita Talavera placed third for UW-L in 11:04.73.

200 freestyle
Stevens Point stretched its lead to 31-24 when Jerica Crook nabbed the crown in 1:58.56. La Crosse took second and third as Danielle Rux (1:59.36) and Heather Vogts (2:00.59) rounded out the top three.

50 freestyle
UWSP took a huge 47-27 lead with a 1-2-3 effort in the 50 free. Kelsey Crunstedt won in 24.79, while teammates Caitlin Hake (24.83) and Beth Bard (25.05) took second and third, respectively. Clare Hathaway gave UW-L its best finish with a fourth-place 25.11.

200 IM
La Crosse cut the gap to 54-39 with Kelly Hackbarth (2:14.50) edging out UWSP's Kristen Bennett (2:14.96). Abby Strobel of Stevens Point closed out the top three in 2:16.13.

Three-meter diving
UW-L took a huge chunk out of the lead after diving, trailing by only two points, 57-55. Amanda Medendorp won with 249.70 points, while teammates Angela Cascio (237.40) and Kristina Wanous (234.75) rounded out the podium with second and third place, respectively. UWSP's Kayla Koenig took fourth with 203.80 points.

200 butterfly
La Crosse took a slim one-point lead, 66-65, when Kelly Hackbarth claimed her second individual title of the day with a 2:12.35. UWSP's Meghan Walsh (2:15.06) and Amy Bennett (2:16.90) finished 2-3.

100 freestyle
Stevens Point absorbed the run and countered in the 100 free with a top-three sweep. Kelsey Crunstedt pocketed her second individual crown with a 54.15, while Beth Bard took second in 54.73. Jerica Crook finished third in 54.79, while Clare Hathaway provided UW-L its best finish with a fourth-place 54.97.

200 backstroke
La Crosse chopped the deficit to 90-79 with Kristi Parker nearly posting her second B-cut of the day. She touched first in 2:10.67, while UWSP's Abby Strobel (2:12.52) and Dana Odorizzi (2:16.93) took second and third, respectively.

500 freestyle
Stevens Point eclipsed the century mark en route to taking the steam out of UW-L with another 1-2-3. Kari Slawson won in 5:21.74, while Lindsey Googins took second in 5:23.06 and Alissa Colbert placed third in 5:23.51. Sarah Russart gave UW-L its highest finish with a fourth-place 5:26.89.

One-meter diving
La Crosse closed to within 109-98 with a dominant diving break. Amanda Medendorp swept the diving titles with 252.25 points, while Kristina Wanous took second with 231.70 points and Angela Cascio finished third with 223.35 points. Maggie Rosier wound up fourth for UWSP with 206.85 points.

200 breaststroke
Stevens Point responded to take a 123-103 advantage with a top-two sweep. Kristen Bennett clocked a B-cut time of 2:26.85, while Annie Houlihan finished second in 2:30.11. UW-L's Lauren Sweeney rounded out the podium in 2:31.06.

400 freestyle relay
UWSP closed out the 136-107 win over a feisty La Crosse when Kelsey Crunstedt, Jerica Crook, Beth Bard and Caitlin Hake won the 400 free relay in 3:36.34. UW-L's foursome of Danielle Rux, Brianna Peyer, Kristi Parker and Heather Vogts placed second in 3:42.12.
