Richmond Women Edge Out William & Mary, 153.5-146.5

WILLIAMSBURG, Virginia, January 27. -THE Richmond Spider swimming and diving team won on the road at William & Mary, Friday, Jan. 26, 153.5-146.5. The Spiders picked up several top finishes, including three individual wins from sophomore Lauren Beaudreau in the 100 and 200 breast as well as the 400 IM.

"William & Mary is good and we expected them to be tough and inspired tonight," head coach Matt Barany said. "I think they are well prepared for their conference championship meet."

The Spiders jumped out early by winning each of the first two events. Freshman Alex Helland, Beaudreau and freshmen Katie Sieben and Joanna Rakoczy logged the fastest 200 medley time of the season for Richmond in 1:46.41. Senior Caitlin Geary followed up the winning relay performance with a top time in the 1,000 free event. The Andover, Mass., native won the event after turning in a time of 10:23.17.

"I really liked our intensity level tonight," Barany said. "The women were very eager to get the night started with our medley relays. I think that showed how ready we were as a team tonight."

Helland added to the Richmond winnings by taking home the top spot in the 100 back with a mark of 58.55. Beaudreau then notched the first of her three individual wins in the 100 breast in 1:04.83. The Lafayette, Calif., native went on to win both the 200 breast (2:19.41) and the 400 IM (4:30.78).

"Lauren (Beaudreau) was very dependable tonight," Barany said. "We surprised her a bit by making some lineup changes late in the meet, but she came through."

Junior Jessica Witt and Geary turned in 1-2 performances, respectively, in the 500 free with marks of 4:58.44 and 4:59.36, while Sieben capped off the night with a win in the 100 fly going 57.53.

"It's back to practice in the morning," Barany added. "I think we're in the right place right now, but nobody is resting on what we have already done."

The Spiders have just one meet remaining on their regular-season slate, a trip to Charlottesville, Va., to face Virginia, Jan. 31. Swimming action against the Cavaliers is scheduled to get underway at 5 p.m. Be sure to logon to Richmond's official athletics website — RichmondSpiders.com for all the latest information on Spider swimming and diving.
