ANTHONY ERVIN WINS SECOND TITLE IN 100 FREE

Cal freshman Anthony Ervin, who set a world record in winning the 50, won the 100m free as outside smoke from lane 1. He set a U.S. Open record of 47.36, breaking his own mark from the lead-off of the 400 free relay in prelims. Arizona sophomore Roland Schoeman, from South Africa, was second in 47.51. Cal also took third and fourth, with senior Bart Kizierowski, from Poland, going 47.76 and sophomore Matthew Macedo going 47.77. Texas junior Jamie Rauch was fifth in 48.36, Auburn junior Greg Busse was sixth in 48.42, Hawaii junior Nick Folker, from South Africa, was seventh in 48.62 and Stanford junior Anthony Robinson was eighth in 50.61.
In the consolation final, Florida junior Nathan Summers was ninth in 48.34; Adam Pine of Nebraska, the 100 fly champion, was tenth in 48.56; Bryan Jones of Texas was 11th in 48.79; Brian Malich of Ohio State was 12th in 48.98; Coley Stickels of Arizona was 13th in 49.08; Chris Kemp of Texas was 14th in 49.30; Jay Schryver of Arizona was 15th in 49.31; and John Stratman of Georgia was 16th in 49.54.
