Mixed Reports on Luo Xuejuan’s Possible Retirement

BEIJING, China, January 25. WHETHER Luo Xuejuan will retire now seems to be in doubt, based on the comments of Zhang Yadong, the head coach of the Chinese National Team. Zhang reacted to reports that Luo has filed retirement papers after suffering from poor health, which includes the possibility of a heart condition.

"Luo does have some health problems but I've never heard she is going to retire," Zhang told The Guardian. "We will make some changes to our 2008 team if she announces her retirement before the Games, but right now I am not even thinking about it."

Luo is the reigning Olympic champion in the 100 breaststroke and won gold in the 50 and 100 breast events at the 2001 and 2003 World Championships.
