Buckeye Men’s Swimming and Diving Topples Iowa, 156-82

COLUMBUS, Ohio, January 20. THE Ohio State men's swimming and diving team defeated conference rival, 156-82, Saturday in Iowa City, Iowa. Three Buckeyes were double-event winners to help the Buckeyes claim 11 of 13 events and capture a team win in the final road dual meet of the season.

Ohio State jumped out to an early lead when the team of R.J. Lemyre (Sr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington), Sam Pelkey (Fr., Muncie, Ind./Delta), Joe Doyle (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio/Centerburg) and Matt Voelker (Jr., Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) stopped the clock first in the 400-yard medley relay. Their time of 3:24.16 was three seconds ahead of the runner-up Hawkeye team (3:27.93).

Mark Neiman (Fr., Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill) and Alex Chen followed their example, finishing first and second, respectively in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Neiman swam a time of 15:45.86 to quench the victory in a clear lead, with Chen following next in 15:56.57. Matthias Sigrist (So., Schaffhausen, Switzerland/Schaffhausen) and George Markovic (Fr., Sydney, Australia/St. Ives) sandwiched Iowa's Brian Farris for a 1-3 finish in the 200-yard freestyle. Sigrist picked up the win in 1:43.72 and Markovic rounded out the Top 3 in 1:45.17.

Doyle recorded a win in the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 20.98 to continue the team's success in the freestyle events. Teammate Joel Elber (Fr., Brunswick, Ohio/Brunswick) swam the sprint in 22.02 for third place. Ohio State was responsible for all three medal spots in the 100-yard freestyle. Voelker garnered the win in 46.74. Michael Kordel (So., Cleveland, Ohio/St. Edwards) hit the wall next in 47.66. Elber took third in 48.14.

The Buckeyes captured the Top 3 spots in a second freestyle event – the 500-yard freestyle. Neiman edged out his own teammate to win in 4:36.71. Markovic finished behind him in 4:36.86, while Chen touched in at 4:41.50.

The Buckeyes swept the 400-yard individual medley, with Nate King (Sr., Youngstown, Ohio/Warren Harding) leading the group with a winning time of 3:56.71. Scott Blake (So., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla./Suncoast) was the runner-up with a time of 4:10.21. Andrew Olson (Fr., Allison Park, Penn/Hampton) swam to third place in 4:10.69.

The sweep continued into the 1-meter diving, as Wes Wieser (So., Chesterfield, Mo./Parkway Central) earned the win with a score of 320.85. Ryan Jefferson (Fr., Madison, Wis./Madison Edgewood) grabbed the silver in a score of 316.30. Nick Hanneman (Sr., Upper Arlington, Ohio/ Upper Arlington) dove a score of 298.95 to complete the podium. Hanneman went on to record his first win of the season on the 3-meter in a score of 351.60. Wieser took home the silver in a score of 317.15. Kellen Harkness (Sr., Puyallup, Wash./Cascade Christian) dove to third place with a total of 286.50 points.

Sigrist posted his second win of the meet in the 200-yard butterfly. He completed the race in 1:54.38. King also picked up a second win. He swam the fastest time of 1:50.86 in the 200-yard backstroke. Lemyre placed third in the event. His time was 1:55.16.

Although Ohio State chose to swim the final two events as exhibition, Pelkey swam the second-fastest time of 2:07.78. The men also swam the fastest time of 3:05.90 in the 400-yard freestyle.

The team will return to the Bill and Mae McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion for its final dual meet before the Big Ten championships with a tri-meet with conference foes Northwestern and Michigan, Friday at 5 p.m. and Saturday at noon.
