Resident Athlete Back in Pool -- November 24, 1996

Just when we thought that swimmers had to give up their collegiate swimming eligibility in order to be a part of the Resident National Team in Colorado Springs, Co, we found Richelle DePold back in the pool swimming for the University of North Carolina. And, not only is she swimming, she's doing quite well. She's leading the nation in both the 50 and the 100 freestyle, based on times that have been submitted to Swimming World's College Best Times. DePold, who competed for UCLA in 1994 and left school to join the resident team, apparently petitioned the NCAA after failing to qualify for the 1996 Olympic squad and was granted eligibility for her senior year.
