Georgia Men Hand Vols First Loss on Senior Day

KNOXVILLE, Tennessee, January 20. THE Tennessee Men's Swimming and Diving team fell to the Georgia Bulldogs on Senior Day, 138-103, despite Saturday's strong efforts led by Octavio Alesi.

"Georgia came to the competition well-prepared," UT head swim coach John Trembley said. "And their athletes stepped up today in most events. We just didn't stand up against them in the distance freestyle, butterfly, and the 1- and 3-meter diving."

The dive team struggled in scoring contribution but came away with a couple of moral victories.

"Michael Muscari accomplished a career-best in the 1-meter (with a score of 307.35)," UT diving coach Dave Parrington said. "Ryan Rincon, after having been out due to his grandmother's illness, showed some good signs today as he qualified for NCAA Zone B Diving in Georgia."

The Vols' freestyle and relays, however, proved to be their strong points on the day.

Michael Wolfe, Michael Russo, Andrew Engle and Octavio Alesi took first place in the 400 medley relay with a time 3:18.81. The 200 freestyle relay which consisted of Alesi, Nolan Morrell, Engle and Barry Murphy smoked the competition, finishing first in 2:21.22. Alesi and Murphy placed first and second in the 50 freestyle, Morrell finished first in the 200 freestyle, and Murphy and Morrell captured 2nd and 3rd in the 100 freestyle.

"We swam pretty well across the board," Trembley said. "We're very pleased, in particular, with Alesi who had a remarkable 50 freestyle for this time of year. Peter McVey and Russo were very strong their legs of the medley relay. In addition, Wolfe had a very strong 200 backstroke."

The Vols will next travel to Gainesville, Fla. Friday to take on the Gators at 7:00 p.m.
