Iowa Teams Take Out Western Illinois

IOWA CITY, Iowa, January 19. THE University of Iowa men and women's swimming team returned to action Friday night, hosting the Western Illinois Leathernecks and Westerwinds. The Hawkeye men won 127-75, and the women won 123-56. The Iowa men evened their record at 5-5 (1-2 Big Ten) and the Hawkeye women now stand at 6-5 (0-3 Big Ten). The Hawkeye men's competition for Saturday, Ohio State, defeated the Leathernecks 120-79.

Junior Dragos Agache led the Hawkeye men with a win in the 50 breast (26.23) and a third place finish in the 100 IM (54.35). Freshman Brad Jones recorded Iowa's only other first place finish in the 50 free (21.83). Freshman Jake Moore set a personal season-best time of 48.36 in a second place finish in the 100 free. Sophomore James Dragon (23.69 – 50 fly) and freshman Wil Whaley (50 back – 25.16) also added second place finishes.

Freshman Margie Chamberlin led the Iowa women with wins in the 200 free (1:56.10) and the 50 fly (26.34). Senior captain Robin Samples (100 free – 54.06), senior Emmy Haeger (50 breast – 29.95), and sophomores Alison Gschwend (50 back – 27.82) and Emily Hoefler (50 breast – 29.95) each had one first place finish. The freshmen duo of Julie Feingold (100 IM – 1:02.18) and Julie deBruin (50 free – 24.55) also added first place finishes.

The Hawkeyes will host their final regular season action and honor six seniors tomorrow. The Iowa women will square off against Illinois and the Hawkeye men will face 15th ranked Ohio State. The meet will begin at 11 a.m. at the University of Iowa Fieldhouse Pool, and is free to the public.
