Flanders Swimming Cup Concludes in Belgium

ANTWERP, Belgium, January 16. OVER the weekend, several of Europe's top swimmers competed in the Flanders Swimming Cup held in Antwerp, Belgium from Jan. 12-14.

During the initial day of competition, two competitors set meet records. Camelia Potec hit the wall in 16:37.40 in the 1500 freestyle to destroy the former meet record of 18:42.03 set by Sandrine Gobert on March 11, 2005. Stefan Nystrand then eclipsed the meet standard in the 50 free with a time of 22.49. That knocked nearly a half-second off the 22.88 set by Julien Sicot on March 12, 2006.

On Saturday, Belgian records started to plummet from the sky. First, Glenn Surgeloose broke the 200 free record with a third-place time of 1:50.74. Pieter van den Hoogenband won the event with a time of 1:47.30. Next, Tom Vangeneugden snapped his own Belgian record in the 1500 free with a time of 15:27.43, before Mathieu Fonteyns clocked a 1:59.55 in the 200 fly to break Stefan Maene's Belgian record in the event.

By the end of the day, eight meet records were broken. Marleen Veldhuis (50 free – 24.37 and 50 fly -26.18), Camelia Potec (400 free – 4:12.43), Valentina Brat (200 back – 2:17.96), Dragos Coman (1500 free – 15:26.43), Jakob Johannes Sveinsson (200 breast -2:18.71), Ioannis Drymonakos (200 fly -1:58.93) and Elise Matthysen (50 breast – 32.85).

On the final day of swimming, Mathieu Fonteyn broke the 100 fly Belgian record with a time of 54.31.
