Cooper Earns Scottish National Record in 200-meter Fly

GLASGOW, Scotland, January 13. THE Scottish National Short Course Championships continued today at Tollcross Park Leisure Centre in Glasgow.

The day started with BBC Radio Scotland's Sports Weekly program coming live from poolside, with John Beattie and Katie Still interviewing athletes, parents and Institute staff between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. They finished the show with the BBC Radio Scotland ‘Performance of the Year' Trophy being officially presented to Scotland's Commonwealth Games Aquatics Squad, with David Carry accepting the award on behalf of the squad.

During the finals Stirling Swimming's Todd Cooper sliced almost a second and a half off the Scottish National Senior Record on his way to Gold in the final of the Men's 200m Butterfly. Cooper went into the final third fastest but led from the front to beat Stirling team mate, Andy Hunter into second (1:49.27) and Lewis Smith of Warrender Baths Club into third (1:59.66). Cooper's new record now stands at 1:56.61.

Megan Gilchrist and Robyn Matthews (both City of Edinburgh Swimming) continued their rivalry in the final of the Women's 400m Freestyle. Just as in last night's 800m Freestyle, the girls swam shoulder to shoulder until the final 25m, when Robyn just edged ahead to take the title a mere two tenths of a second ahead of Megan (4:15.68/4:15.86). Kerry Buchan from South Aberdeenshire was third in 4:24.18.

The final race of the night saw Warrender Baths Club set a new Scottish National Club Record for the Women's 200m Medley Relay. The squad of Rosie Hood, Fiona Booth, Sally Wood and Katelyn Stewart took control from the start and held off the challenge from Silver medalists, City of Edinburgh Swimming to finish in a time of 1:59.03.
