VENDT SETS AMERICAN, U.S. OPEN RECORDS IN 400 I.M. PRELIMS

Southern Cal freshman Erik Vendt smashed the American record in the 400 meter I.M. this morning, with a 4:08.22. This was over three seconds better than Chad Carvin's American record set earlier this year (4:11.72).
The rest of the field promises a close race tonight: Florida sophomore Eric Donnelly qualified second in 4:11.28, Michigan sophomore Tim Siciliano qualified third in 4:11.31, Nebraska senior Michael Windisch qualified fourth in 4:11.43, and Auburn sophomore Kevin Clements qualified fifth in 4:11.58. Stanford junior Steven Brown is seeded sixth (4:12.28), Southern Cal sophomore Mark Warkentin is seventh (4:13.35) and Texas sophomore Joe Montague is eighth (4:14.10).
