Oakland Sweeps Hope College

ROCHESTER, Michigan, January 6. OAKLAND's men's and women's swimming and diving teams each posted victories over Hope College in a dual meet at Lepley Pool this afternoon. Both teams won 10 of 14 events, including one relay win apiece. Junior Kim Bacon (Bolton, Ontario) led the women's team with three wins in two individual events and a relay, while freshman Rachel Girard (Minneapolis, Minn.) also won two individual events. On the men's side it was newcomer Marcin Unold (Gliwice, Poland) pacing OU in his Golden Grizzly debut with three wins in two individual events and a relay. Freshman Eddie Toro (Toronto, Ontario) also won two individual events.

The OU women opened the meet with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay as sophomore Tara Baxter (Manotick, Ontario), Bacon, junior Rachel Beardsley (Fenton, Mich.) and junior Elaine Shalla (Fenton, Mich.) combined for a time of 1:53.71.

Juniors Carolyn Routh (Sandusky, Ohio) and Katie Wilke (Sandusky, Ohio) finished 1-2 in the 1000 free, as Routh completed the course in 10:51.39 and Wilke was six seconds behind at 10:57.12. Girard picked up her first win of the afternoon in the next event, improving her best time of the year in the 200 free by nearly a second with a 1:56.59.

Freshman Sarah Ludema (Zeeland, Mich.) captured the 100 backstroke in 1:00.97, while Bacon clocked a 1:09.49 in the 100 breaststroke for her second victory of the day. Beardsley was tops in the 50 free with a 24.66, while Shalla hit the wall at 54.09 to win the 100 free.

Baxter and Ludema posted OU's second 1-2 finish of the day in the 200 back, as Baxter's 2:13.27 edged Ludema by just six one-hundredths of a second. Bacon registered her third win of the afternoon in the 200 breaststroke, hitting the wall at 2:29.57.

Girard and Routh combined for another 1-2 finish for the Golden Grizzlies, this time in the 500 free. Girard's 5:06.03 was an improvement of more than a second from her previous best time, while Routh followed in 5:22.39.

In diving, freshman Missy Butcher (Holland, Mich.) captured victories in both the 1-meter board and the 3-meter board. Her score of 192.27 in the 1-meter was a season best, while her 166.20 in the 3-meter was her second highest of the year.

The Golden Grizzly men opened the meet with the tandem of Unold, sophomore Andy Kellogg (Chelsea, Mich.), junior Chris Tansel (Dundee, Mich.) and junior Zoltan Horvath (Balatonalmadi, Hungary) winning the 200 medley relay in 1:35.37.

Sophomore Anthony Serio (Oakland, Mich.) was the victor in the 200 free, posting a 1:45.95. Unold won the 100 back in 52.12, a full four seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

Toro led a 1-2-3 finish for OU in the 100 breaststroke with a 59.00, shaving more than a second off his previous best time. Kellogg was not far behind at 59.84, while sophomore Steven Catala (Wylie, Texas) followed in 1:01.04.

Sophomore Jason Manasseri (Austin, Texas) led OU to its second 1-2-3 finish in as many events when he edged teammate Dawid Tatarczyk (Miedziana, Poland) by one tenth of a second in the 200 butterfly. Manasseri clocked in at 1:58.41, while Tatarczyk's 1:58.51 was a season-best for the sophomore. Sophomore Alex Brinks (Hudsonville, Mich.) finished third with a 2:05.55.

Sophomore Luke Ortego (Rockford, Mich.) was victorious in the 50 free, hitting the wall at 21.69. Tansel was second, clocking in at 22.13. Ortego was not as fortunate in the 100 free however, as teammate Kellogg won the race in 47.88 while Ortego clocked a 48.30.

Unold led OU's third straight 1-2 finish as he took the 200 back in 1:54.67. Freshman Patrick Downing (Kirkland, Quebec) followed in 1:55.02. Toro and Catala combined for the Golden Grizzlies' fourth consecutive 1-2 finish in the 200 breaststroke. Toro paced the field with a 2:11.43 while Catala followed in 2:17.15.

Tatarczyk, Serio and sophomore Garrett Baringhaus (Livonia, Mich.) combined for another 1-2-3 finish for OU, this one in the 500 free. Tatarczyk edged Serio by just 0.06, hitting the wall at 4:48.34. Baringhaus swam a 5:01.36 for third place.

In diving, junior Ryan Kish (Rockford, Mich.) posted a pair of victories in the 1-meter board and the 3-meter board. His score of 308.60 in the 1-meter board was a personal best, while his 354.15 was a season high. Freshman Adam Ralph (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) placed second in the 1-meter board with a score of 267.98, just 0.73 points ahead of senior John VanPortfleet (Grand Rapids, Mich.). In the 3-meter board VanPortfleet's 264.00 topped Ralph's 252.75 for second. Freshman Mike Ledesma (Holland, Mich.) placed fourth in both events, compiling 245.85 on the 1-meter board and a 226.00 on the 3-meter board.
