Boston College Earns Orange Bowl Swimming Classic Title

KEY LARGO, Florida, January 7. BOSTON College took overall men and women's titles Saturday at the Orange Bowl Swimming Classic in the Florida Keys. The Eagles took five first places in the 24-event competition at the Jacob's Aquatic Center.

But it was the team's depth and consistent performance throughout the day that Boston swimming coach Tom Groden attributed to the win, despite his team arriving in Key Largo from Boston at 1 a.m. Saturday.

"They came prepared and we got very good results," said Groden, who brought 69 of 71 of the team's swimmers to the contest. "We're a very deep team on both sides (men and women) and I'm sure that's what helped us to win."

Second- and third-place, in both men's and women's divisions, went to Whitworth College (Spokane, Wa.) and Stony Brook University (New York). Seven other colleges and universities including Colby Sawyer College (New London, N.H.); East Stroudsberg University (Penn.); College of Saint Benedict (St. Joseph, Mn.); St. Peters College (New Jersey); Vassar College (New York), Washington College, Chestertown, Md.; and the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. The Classic is a highlight event of a month-long training season for collegiate swimmers in the Keys.
