Statistics: Maintaining Youth Interest in Swimming a Chore in Australia

QUEENSLAND, Australia, January 2. A report in The Age showed that plenty of Australian children are being introduced to the pool at a young age, but that the water is giving way to the soccer pitch in later years. According to a survey by the Bureau of Statistics, 463,000 Aussie children took swimming lessons last year, an increase of 40 percent over nine years ago.

But, the report also indicated that of the 25 percent of children between the ages of 5 and 8, only eight percent are still involved in the sport between the ages of 12 and 14. Conversely, the nation has seen significant growth in soccer, to the point where it has made major inroads against Aussie Rules Football, long a tradition in the country.
